The stated goals of the Drug Enforcement Agency are to reduce drug production, supply, and use. While the DEA shows themselves as a necessary agency with their drug bust accolades, what they have really done is created a vast criminal market with social and economic costs beyond the billions in enforcement spending. Antonio Costa, the executive director of the United Nations Office of Drugs and Crime hit the nail on the head in a recent press release. Antonio exclaimed. “The first unintended consequence is a huge criminal black market that thrives on prohibited substances. Whether driven by a ‘supply push’ or a ‘demand pull’; the financial incentives to enter this market are enormous. There is no shortage of criminals… hundred-fold increases in price from production to retail are not uncommon.”
